Creating barcodes for products has two separate parts: obtain an authorized product identifier, then render it in the symbol required by retailers. QRBarcode handles the second part for existing UPC-A and EAN-13 values. It does not sell GTINs, issue a GS1 Company Prefix, register products, or guarantee marketplace acceptance.
Identifier first, image second
A retail barcode carries a number that a scanner passes to a catalog or point-of-sale database. The image does not contain the current price, product title, ingredients, or stock quantity. Before using a product barcode generator, the brand owner needs a legitimate identifier and must associate it with accurate product data through each trading partner's process.
GS1 is the standards organization commonly used to allocate company prefixes or individual GTINs. Requirements differ by country, marketplace, retailer, product type, and seller relationship. Consult the relevant GS1 member organization and receiving platform rather than purchasing unexplained recycled numbers.
How to create a barcode for a product
- Ask every target retailer or marketplace which identifiers and symbols it accepts.
- Obtain GTINs from an authorized source and document ownership.
- Assign a distinct number to each product and variant under the applicable rules.
- Store identifiers as text so leading zeroes are preserved.
- Render GTIN-12 as UPC-A or GTIN-13 as EAN-13 when required.
- Place the vector artwork at compliant size and contrast.
- Verify production prints and submit product data to trading partners.
Generating the bars is only step five. Skipping allocation or catalog onboarding can leave a mathematically valid symbol that scans to no product or conflicts with another owner.
UPC, EAN, and GTIN
GTIN is the family of Global Trade Item Numbers. UPC-A commonly displays a 12-digit GTIN, while EAN-13 displays a 13-digit GTIN. GTIN-14 may identify packaging levels and may use a different carrier specified by the workflow. Database systems sometimes pad numbers to a uniform length, but storage representation does not automatically dictate the printed symbol.
Each value ends in a modulo-10 check digit. The formula detects many input errors; it does not confer ownership. QRBarcode validates or calculates the check digit for supported retail rendering.
Assign variants consistently
Different sizes, colors, flavors, pack counts, or materially changed products may require distinct identifiers under GS1 rules. Do not reuse a discontinued item's number casually. Maintain a controlled product master with assignment date, owner, description, status, packaging level, and markets. Restrict who can create or retire records.
Internal Code 128 asset labels serve a different purpose and should not be confused with globally unique retail identification. A warehouse can define an internal key, while a marketplace can still require a GTIN on consumer packaging.
Print and retailer acceptance
Preserve bar proportions and quiet zones. Use high contrast and avoid horizontal compression. Package curvature, seams, transparent film, metallic ink, low-resolution thermal output, and glossy coating can reduce grades. Choose placement that lets checkout scanners see the complete width naturally.
Large retailers may require formal verification or artwork approval. A successful phone scan is useful but not a substitute for their specification. Test the production package, not only a PDF proof.

Launch checklist for a product line
Create a controlled spreadsheet or product-information system with one row per sellable variant and packaging level. Record the authorized GTIN, brand, market description, net quantity, status, owner, and target partners. Store numbers as text. Require review before a value moves into package artwork.
For barcodes for products that will be sold across several markets, collect each partner's carrier, size, placement, verification, and onboarding rules. Do not assume one retailer's accepted proof establishes another retailer's compliance. Produce a physical sample for each package structure and important print method.
Changes after launch
When a product changes, use current GS1 management rules to decide whether it keeps its GTIN. New flavor, size, pack count, or other meaningful changes may require a new number. Do not reuse a retired barcode for retail products merely to save an allocation. Old catalog and consumer records can persist long after the package disappears.
Keep an artwork revision linked to its product record. If the item scans to the wrong description, identify whether the package has the wrong number or the retailer has the wrong catalog association. Reprinting cannot correct a partner database, and updating the database cannot correct bars for another item.
