EAN-13 and GTIN-13

EAN-13 is the linear symbol commonly used to carry a 13-digit Global Trade Item Number. The final digit is a modulo-10 check digit; the earlier digits belong to the assigned identifier. A checkout scanner reads the number and asks the retailer's database for description and price. None of that product information is stored in the bars.

Check-digit scope

The calculation weights alternating digits by one and three, then chooses the final digit that makes the sum a multiple of ten. It catches many transcription mistakes. It cannot prove registration, current ownership, product authenticity, or correct catalog association. A fabricated number can pass the formula.

Leading zeroes are meaningful. Spreadsheet imports often remove them or display long identifiers in scientific notation, so store GTIN fields as text and inspect raw exports.

Print constraints

EAN-13 has defined bar proportions and side quiet zones. Do not squeeze it horizontally, crop guard bars, place text over the symbol, or use low contrast. SVG gives a packaging designer crisp vector edges, but scaling still must respect the trading partner's size and print-quality requirements.

Ink spread, thermal gaps, curved packaging, transparent film, and glossy varnish can cause a phone proof to differ from production. Use verification equipment when a retailer requires a formal grade.

EAN versus UPC

EAN-13 contains 13 digits and is widely used internationally; UPC-A visibly contains 12 and is common in North America. Some systems represent UPC values within a 13- or 14-digit database field by adding leading zeroes. Do not choose the printed format solely from database storage length—follow the receiving system's symbology specification.

Retail barcode onboarding
