UPC vs EAN vs GTIN: What Is the Difference?

Short comparison

In UPC vs EAN vs GTIN terminology, GTIN is the identifier family, while UPC-A and EAN-13 are barcode symbols commonly used to carry particular GTIN lengths. UPC-A carries a 12-digit GTIN-12 and is common in North America. EAN-13 carries a 13-digit GTIN-13 and is common internationally. GS1 assignment and retailer requirements determine what a product needs.

The terms are sometimes used loosely in catalogs, which is why the exact digits, leading zeroes, printed symbology, and receiving specification matter.

GTIN is the identification key

A Global Trade Item Number identifies a trade item. GS1 defines GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13, and GTIN-14 structures, each including a final check digit. The preceding digits are assigned under GS1 rules through a company prefix and item reference or another allocation route.

GTIN does not itself describe one visual pattern. A GTIN-14 may appear in a GS1 barcode selected for a packaging level, while a database can store shorter values padded to a 14-digit field.

UPC-A and GTIN-12

UPC-A visually contains 12 digits and is the familiar retail symbol on many North American products. The last digit checks the first 11. A checkout scanner returns the number and the store looks up product and price.

Use an UPC barcode generator only with a legitimately assigned number. Rendering invented digits does not register an item or guarantee marketplace acceptance.

EAN-13 and GTIN-13

EAN-13 visually contains 13 digits and is widely used outside North America. It also ends with a modulo-10 check. The EAN-13 generator can calculate or validate that final digit, but ownership and catalog onboarding remain separate.

Some readers report a UPC-A with a leading zero as EAN-13. The underlying numeric relationship does not mean designers may freely alter assigned values or printed formats.

Difference between UPC and EAN

The visible digit count and traditional market usage are the simplest differences. Both use related EAN/UPC linear encoding families and retail scanning infrastructure. A retailer may accept either, normalize them in software, or demand a specific one. Follow explicit onboarding documentation.

Do not choose based only on where a company is headquartered. Choose according to the identifier allocation and every target marketplace's requirements.

Check digits do not prove ownership

The alternating-weight modulo-10 formula catches common entry errors. Any person can create digits that pass it. Therefore “valid” in a generator or lookup means structurally valid, not assigned, licensed, authentic, or present in a catalog.

A third-party lookup may return no product for a legitimate new number or a product for a copied number. Use the product owner, retailer, and official GS1 services for consequential verification.

Do I need UPC or EAN for my product?

List target retailers, marketplaces, distributors, and regions. Ask which GTIN and carrier they require. Obtain identifiers from the correct GS1 member organization, assign variants according to current rules, render the requested symbol, verify production print, and submit product data to each partner.

Different sizes, colors, pack counts, or packaging levels may need distinct assignments. Keep a governed product master and never recycle values casually.

Common data mistakes

Spreadsheet tools remove leading zeroes, convert long numbers to scientific notation, and round numeric cells. Store identifiers as text. Do not add or remove a leading zero just to fit a field without knowing its normalized GTIN policy. Preserve the authoritative original and document every transformation.

Product master controls

Create one governed record per trade item with the assigned GTIN, printed carrier, market, packaging level, status, owner, and source. Restrict assignment and retirement. Link artwork, catalog submissions, and verification reports to that record. A packaging designer should never decide UPC vs EAN vs GTIN treatment from an old label.

Before release, one reviewer compares the human-readable digits and another scans the production proof. The application result must match the intended item. If a retailer stores a padded value, document its normalization without changing the authorized source.

Marketplace questions

Ask whether the platform requires a GS1-licensed GTIN, which lengths it accepts, whether exemptions exist, how variants and bundles are assigned, which symbol must be printed, and how product data is submitted. Save the policy date because requirements can change.

The difference between UPC and EAN is not a shortcut around ownership. Purchasing a number that happens to have the preferred length may still fail brand verification. Start from authorized allocation and partner requirements.

Packaging levels

Consumer unit, inner pack, case, and pallet can need different identifiers and carriers. GTIN-14 is often relevant above the consumer unit, but the logistics partner defines how it is encoded and scanned. Do not print an EAN-13 merely because the first 13 digits look familiar.
