What a Wi-Fi code stores
A Wi-Fi QR code contains a structured string with the SSID, authentication type, password, and optional hidden flag. Compatible phones recognize the pattern and offer to join the network. The code is not a secure password vault: anyone who can scan or photograph it can recover the encoded credentials with a reader.
Choose WPA for modern WPA/WPA2/WPA3 personal networks when the device exposes that family, WEP only for legacy equipment that truly uses it, and None for an open network. The selection must match the access point. A wrong security mode produces a valid-looking code that fails to connect.
Create a QR code for Wi-Fi password access
- Copy the SSID exactly, including capitalization and spaces.
- Select the network's real authentication mode.
- Enter the network password without adding quotation marks.
- Enable hidden only if the SSID is intentionally not broadcast.
- Generate and scan with a device not already connected.
- Confirm the phone proposes the expected network.

Escaping names and passwords

Test the exact credentials on both Android and iOS rather than assuming every reader behaves identically.
Do not “simplify” a password in the code while leaving the router unchanged. A failed join often comes from a case mismatch, copied trailing space, wrong security type, or obsolete printed credentials.
Guest network security
Use a separate guest SSID with client isolation and appropriate rate or content controls instead of exposing the main office or home network. Rotate the guest network password when a code is removed from controlled space or shared more broadly than intended. Reprinting is required after a static credential changes.
Place the code inside reception, a rental property, a meeting room, or another managed area. Avoid posting it in public photos. A frame can say “Guest Wi-Fi” and name the intended location without printing the password as visible text.
Troubleshoot connection failures
First verify that the device can see the network and connect by manually typing the same password. Then check case, whitespace, security mode, and hidden flag. Forget an already saved network so the phone actually tests the new payload. Enterprise 802.1X networks with usernames, certificates, or device enrollment are outside this simple personal-network format.
If the code is not detected at all, restore dark-on-light contrast, preserve the quiet zone, enlarge the print, and remove decorative logos. If it scans but does not connect, the QR image is readable and the credentials or network state need investigation.

Create a QR code for Wi-Fi password rotation
Plan rotation before printing permanent signs. Use a guest network whose SSID can remain stable while the network password changes, keep replacement artwork ready, and remove old cards immediately after the change. Anyone holding a photo of the prior QR code for Wi-Fi retains those old credentials until the router rejects them.
Record the security type, SSID, issue date, owner, placement, and retirement date without storing the clear password in an unnecessarily broad asset list.
