About this tool
Use this QR code scanner online to read a QR code from a PNG, JPEG, WebP, screenshot, or live camera. Decoding happens in your browser; QRBarcode does not upload images or video frames. Results are shown as text first, and web links open only after you choose to confirm them.
Scan a QR code from a screenshot
Choose “Scan an image” and select the screenshot from your device. The QR code reader online loads the file into local browser memory and tries to find a QR matrix. For the strongest result, crop away unrelated screen content while leaving a clear white margin around the code. Do not crop into the modules or the three corner finder patterns.
A screenshot is usually easier to decode than photographing another screen because it avoids glare, moiré patterns, and camera focus. If the source image contains several codes, crop to the one you intend to inspect. The current scanner reports one recognized result rather than pretending to enumerate every symbol in a multi-code image.
Use the camera QR scanner
- Select “Use camera.”
- Approve browser camera permission when prompted.
- Hold the code inside the video view with all four sides visible.
- Move slightly closer only after the camera has focused.
- Keep reflections away from glossy screens or packaging.
- Review the decoded format and text.
- Copy the result or explicitly open a confirmed HTTP or HTTPS link.
Camera permission is optional. If access is denied, no camera exists, or the browser cannot start the stream, the page displays a recoverable message and the image-upload path remains available. Change the site's browser permission and retry if you prefer live scanning.
Private browser-side decoding
Images and video frames stay in the browser for decoding. They are not posted to an API by this QR code scanner online. The selected image receives a temporary local object URL and is released after processing. This privacy boundary applies to scanning; opening a decoded website naturally sends a request to that external site.
Avoid scanning codes that reveal secrets on a shared screen. The result may still be visible to people nearby or retained in the system clipboard if copied. Close the page and clear clipboard history when handling sensitive information.
Review links before opening
A QR code can contain text, contact data, Wi-Fi settings, or a URL. This scanner always shows the payload first. It never automatically navigates when recognition succeeds. Only http and https results receive an open action; unsafe or unsupported schemes stay as copyable text.
Inspect the domain, spelling, and path. Attackers can place a sticker over a legitimate restaurant, parking, delivery, or payment code. Be cautious with shortened links, unfamiliar domains, urgent sign-in prompts, payment requests, and downloads. A successfully decoded pattern says nothing about the destination's trustworthiness.
Troubleshoot an unreadable image
If the scanner cannot read QR from image input, try the original file rather than a messaging-app thumbnail. Increase brightness, straighten perspective, remove shadows, and include the quiet zone. Very small, blurred, compressed, inverted, or highly decorated codes may fail. A large center logo may cover too many data modules despite error correction.
For a printed code, move the camera until the entire square is sharp. For a screen, raise brightness and avoid reflections. If the page recognizes a barcode instead, use the dedicated barcode reader online so the format can be reported appropriately.
What recognition proves
Decoding demonstrates that this browser and ZXing can interpret the supplied frame. It is not a universal “100% scannable” certification. Other phones, enterprise readers, damaged labels, different lighting, or smaller print may behave differently. Test codes in the real environment before a campaign or production run.
Frequently asked questions
Can I scan a saved QR code on the same phone? Yes. Take or save a screenshot, then choose it with the image option.
Are images uploaded? No. Decoding is performed locally in the current browser.
Why does camera access fail? Permission may be denied, another app may be using the camera, the page may lack a secure context, or the device may have no available camera.
Will the scanner open links automatically? No. It displays the result and waits for confirmation.
Validate generated and printed samples
Use the QR code scanner online as one step in creation quality control. Upload the actual SVG rasterization or PNG, compare the decoded payload with the source, then photograph the final print and scan QR code content from that image. A difference between export and photo isolates a production, lighting, or placement issue.
For a batch, sample the densest, smallest, most customized, and most damaged-looking codes. Record failure conditions instead of retrying until one frame succeeds. A camera QR scanner that needs an unnatural angle or bright light is warning that real users may struggle.
Handle sensitive results
Local decoding reduces image disclosure but does not make the underlying payload harmless. Before copying a Wi-Fi password, contact record, recovery string, or private URL, consider whether the current device and clipboard are appropriate. Do not paste unknown text into a terminal or administrative system.
When the QR code reader online finds a URL, confirm the scheme and domain. When it finds non-URL text, preserve it exactly if it will be used as an identifier. This explicit review is why QRBarcode separates recognition, copying, and opening into different actions.
Browser compatibility
Modern browsers with JavaScript, file APIs, and camera access provide the intended experience. Managed devices and privacy extensions can block the camera while leaving image upload functional. If one browser cannot scan QR code input, try the saved-image path before installing an unknown application or weakening device security settings.
